I feel |
good
What a weekend!
Saturday/Sunday was fun. I went with A. to the Pirates of the Caribbean Triple Feature. Whew! Very lovely. :)
I liked the new film – I'm not crazy about it but it definitely didn't disappoint me.
Why did they have to kill Norringtion?! I liked him! And Swann!
The problem is that (just like Dead Man's Chest) for me it's too different from the first one. I'm not saying they have to make the same film three times, but... if you have seen the first one, you wouldn't expect the second and third one to be so... different. The Curse of the Black Pearl is a funny pirate film. Not too serious, good guys are more or less good, bad guys are more or less bad, the good ones stay more or less unharmed and the bad ones die (more or less). Of course they trick each other and there are dangers, but they aren't too... serious, I guess. But here you have real violence; innocent people being killed not only in the background. (Thinking of Mercer and Davy Jones here). They should have tried more to get the same... feeling.
And some of the more important characters being killed – Norrington, Swann, Will. I must admit I was quite surprised to see that they really, really killed Will. I had expected Jack to become the captain of the Flying Dutchman, not Will.
But I thought all that Brethren thingy rather... silly. Honestly. Pirates – Brethren? It worked, yes. But honestly.
And Davy Jones's Locker? I'm not sure what to think about that. All those Jacks. Quite mad. ;)
So.
I did like the first one best.
The "Flying Dutchman" is ridiculous. Ridiculously ugly.
The Brethren. WELL.
The Crew of the Dutchman. You know, I think they overdid that. The ghost pirates in CoBP were funny; the crew is just disgusting.
I did like the first one best.
There are things I like (in theory – as someone expecting a Happy Sappy End (it's Disney, after all!) they did catch me unawares) – that it's no longer only the bad guys dying (I mean, how likely is that?) or only minor characters. I like the way you never know whom to trust – is he really betraying them? Or is that only part of the scheme? What does he really want and why? (Although I must admit it's a little difficult to follow all those schemes when it's five o'clock in the morning and you're rather tired.)
I liked how they hinted how the crew of the Flying Dutchman became the way they are – becoming part of the ship and forgetting who they are.
Tia Dalma being Calypso (and the love of Davy Jones) wasn't so surprising, though.
Aaaand (when I had a moment to think) I wondered if this is not also a criticism of globalisation and all that stuff(I mean - the Eastern Indian Trading Company reminds me a little of all those worldwide operating companies. Influencing politics. A little. And Cutler Beckett and his "The new currency is currency"... not so subtle, hm?)
This all aside, there's a lot swordfighting, tentacles and kaboom.
So maybe this movie is cleverer than it seems. ;)
... and maybe I'm stupid – it was just then that I noticed TEH HOTNESS that is Norrington's voice. *melts*
We arrived at A's at eight in the morning and I was incredibly tired.
And this night my heart was racing like crazy - very unfunny.
